Methanol Testing
Accredited testing for methanol quality and regulated methanol methods (ASTM E346, EN 14110, EN 15721)
Methanol Testing — Purity, Impurities & Safety
Methanol is used widely as a feedstock, solvent and fuel additive. Quality and trace impurities affect processing performance and regulatory compliance. AGT Labs provides accredited methanol analyses following the laboratory scope:
Our accredited services focus on methanol concentration and regulated impurity profiling by validated GC methods appropriate to the sample matrix and intended use (industrial, biodiesel blends or fuel streams).
Who benefits: methanol producers, chemical manufacturers, fuel blenders, and regulatory authorities.
Service Highlights
- Accredited methanol concentration measurement per (fuel/solvent matrix as in scope).
- Methanol quantification in FAME/biodiesel matrices via.
- Method suite for methanol and higher alcohols in fuel streams per.
Industries & Applications
- Chemical manufacturing — methanol feedstock verification for downstream chemistries.
- Fuel blending — accredited checks for methanol in fuel streams and blends (per scope).
- Automotive & marine — acceptance testing where methanol-containing streams fall under accredited methods.
- Regulatory & trade — specification verification for commercial acceptance using accredited methods.
Typical Methanol Test Matrix
Only accredited methanol methods are shown below. Provide intended use/spec limits so we can select the correct accredited method.
| Parameter | Method(s) | Notes / Reporting |
|---|---|---|
| Methanol Content (General fuels & solvents) | ASTM E346 | Accredited GC method for methanol concentration in relevant matrices; results reported with units and LOQ/LOD as per scope. |
| Methanol in Biodiesel (FAME) | EN 14110 | Accredited GC-FID procedure for residual methanol in biodiesel; used for production QC and acceptance testing. |
| Methanol & Higher Alcohols in Fuel Streams | EN 15721 | Accredited technique for methanol and C2–C5 alcohols in fuel blends; select per sample matrix and contractual requirements. |
Laboratory Capabilities & Instrumentation
Instrumentation
GC-FID and GC-MS for methanol and alcohol profiling as required by the accredited methods; headspace techniques where applicable for volatile determinations in the accredited scope.
Quality Assurance
- Testing performed to the lab's accredited scope with SOPs and traceable calibrations.
- COA includes method citation, LOQ/LOD where accredited and measurement uncertainty where applicable.
- For samples or analyses outside accreditation we provide clear notification and can offer alternative (non-accredited) testing on request.
Sampling, Packaging & Chain of Custody
Representative sampling is essential. Provide sample history and intended use so we apply the correct accredited method. Use clean containers appropriate for volatile organics and minimise headspace for volatile determinations.
Recommended Volumes & Containers
- General accredited panels: 100–250 mL in appropriate solvent-safe containers.
- For EN 14110 biodiesel testing follow the sample handling guidance to preserve volatile analytes.
- Label with batch/origin, date/time and sampler details; include CoC for contractual work.
Shipping & Handling
- Ship in sealed secondary containment; methanol is flammable — comply with dangerous goods rules.
- Include completed Chain-of-Custody and any specification/acceptance limits.
- We offer witnessed sampling for contractual or forensic requirements on request.
Methods, Limits & Reporting
Reports include only accredited method references (ASTM E346, EN 14110, EN 15721) where those methods are applied. COAs provide results with units, LOQ/LOD (as per accredited scope) and measurement uncertainty where applicable. Raw chromatograms may be available on request subject to data policy.
- Methanol content: ASTM E346 (accredited where in scope).
- Methanol in biodiesel (FAME): EN 14110 (accredited where in scope).
- Methanol & higher alcohols in fuels: EN 15721 (accredited where in scope).
Turnaround Times & Packages
| Package | Typical Tests | Typical TAT |
|---|---|---|
| Purity Panel (Accredited) | ASTM E346 methanol concentration (as applicable to matrix) | 24–48 h |
| Biodiesel (FAME) Residual Methanol | EN 14110 residual methanol in biodiesel (accredited) | 48–72 h |
| Fuel Stream Alcohols (Accredited) | EN 15721 methanol and C2–C5 alcohols in fuel streams (accredited) | 48–72 h |
